From 1970 to 1975, research on breeding and monoculture techniques of Penaeus monodon was gradually developed at the Tungkang Marine Laboratory in Taiwan Province of China and partly at the IFREMER (Centre Océanologique du Pacifique) in Tahiti in the South Pacific. The culture of this species was then widely spread throughout the southeast and south Asia. Penaeus monodon is one of the most farmed species of shrimp in the world, right behind L. vannamei.
